“Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it?”

Happy Friday! How are you going to spend the “longest day” tomorrow? It is such a pleasure to wake up to the sunshine at 6am and enjoy late dinners outside in the twilight. I am certainly not ready for the days to start getting shorter, so I intend to make the most of these long summer days!
I am very much in a summer mode right now, enjoying as much time outside as possible. I played hooky two afternoons this week and relaxed by the pool…the weather was glorious so how could I not?? Our son is home from California for a week – it will be such a pleasure having both boys home for the weekend! I hope there will be some rowdy water polo matches this weekend just like the days when they were growing up!
For today’s perfect summer escape, let’s head to the northern Michigan to a resort that seems to embody the spirit of summer…The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island…

What do you think? Is Mackinac Island your idea of a perfect summer escape? It definitely fits the bill for me!
Have a splendid first official weekend of summer everyone…wherever you may be wandering!

Anywhere by the water is my kind of resort my friend! And there is nothing quite so AMERICAN as a setting like this, where we have made fond memories by the fourth of the July shores of Marblehead Mass or Boston. White clapboard homes supported by grand pillars, horse and carriage rides, OH YES…..the realities of childhood, the dreams of adulthood. LOVE IT! Anita

Always wanted to visit this gorgeous hotel when we lived in the Midwest but missed seeing it. Oh well, since today is the longest day I can fit it in today! Have a wonderful weekend, Sandy.

It's been so long since my last visit to Mackinac Island. I'd love to return to soak up all of the history and charm there. Sandy, I just discovered your blog today. I'll wander here often! Happy summer days!

It would work for me, too! How lovely and classic it looks – a perfect place to linger on those long summer days that I never want to end. I'm so looking forward to soaking up as much summer as I possibly can. Glad you got to play hooky this week and enjoy some time with your boys. I spontaneously hopped a float plane for the San Juan Islands yesterday to spend some time with a girlfriend who was in from Nashville visiting her parents. Sadly I had to turn around again on the last flight of the evening, but I loved every bit of my day away!
Hope your weekend is wonderful and just the start of a beautiful summer! XOXO

Enjoy your boys Sandy…its the best when the family is together and i am my happiest when everyone is home though all being in the same place at the same time is increasingly challenging:)
This resort is just beautiful! Wow…I am in total vacation mode now and adding to my list of places to see and go fast and furiously:)
Enjoy your weekend.

My dear husband and I were married 34 years ago on the longest day of the year! This year we were in Santa Barbara doing a little, what else, wine tasting! The Grand Hotel is definitely on my wish list!

I LOVE Mackinaw Island! I have stayed on the island many times and at the Grand Hotel only once. The entire place is magical!

The Grand Hotel is at the top of my list for a summertime getaway… It was decorated by one of my all-time favorite decorators, Carleton Varney, AND it was the location for the tear-jerker "Somewhere in Time" staring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour! LOVE!!
XOXO,
