Have you heard of Dîner En Blanc? It is the world’s largest secret dinner party…everyone dresses in white and arrives at a previously undisclosed location only known by the event’s organizers. Dîner En Blanc began in Paris 25 years ago and the concept has spread across the world.
The Paris event was held last Thursday at two locations – the Louvre and the Trocadero, where over 10,000 people showed up clad in white to dine together as part of a “flash mob” type experience…

“At the last minute, the location is given to thousands of friends and acquaintances who have been patiently waiting to learn the ‘Dîner en Blanc’s’ secret place. Thousand of people, dressed all in white, and conducting themselves with the greatest decorum, elegance, and etiquette, all meet for a mass ‘chic picnic’ in a public space. Over the course of an evening, the diners enhance the function and value of their city’s public space by participating in the unexpected. Beyond the spectacle and refined elegance of the dinner itself, guests are brought together from diverse backgrounds by a love of beauty and good taste. Le Dîner en Blanc recalls the elegance and glamour of court society, and diners engage one another knowing they are taking part in a truly magical event. There are no disruptions: no car traffic, no pedestrian traffic, except for the occasional amazed and astonished looks from passersby at the scene unfolding before them. And we, as they, wonder whether it’s all not a dream.”

This phenomenon has spread to the United States with “White Dinners” now being held in Atlantic City, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, and San Francisco.

Seattle just had its third Dîner en Blanc this past Saturday. It was held in a large park (Gas Works Park) that was once home to a refinery that extracted gas from coal. The rusting hulk of the multi-storied old refinery made for an interesting background for the elegant white-clad diners and the tables with white tablecloths. There were about 350 people this year and it continues to grow!
