I recently wrote an article for Destinations Travel Magazine on the Ten Best Airports in the World. Surprisingly (or maybe not so much), none of them were in the United States and only one was in the Americas. Each of them had some fascinating features. Here are some highlights…

The best shopping award goes to London Heathrow (#10)…
Tokyo Haneda Airport (#9) has it’s own planetarium…
via |
Vancouver Airport (#8)has an amazing aquarium containing over 850 species of local marine life…
At Zurich International Airport (#7) you can rent a bike and ride a 12 mile trail surrounding the airport…
via |
In the Munich Airport (#6), you can enjoy the “Fit and Fly” spa while laying over…
Beijing Capital Airport (#5) has a red roof…the entire airport was built in accordance with Feng Shui…
via |
Hong Kong International Airport (#4) has its own IMAX theater…
Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport (#3) has an annex of the famed Rijksmuseum…
via |
Seoul Inchon International Airport (#2) has an ice skating rink…
Singapore Changi (#1) has multiple indoor gardens including a butterfly garden…
I haven’t seen anything at LaGuardia or JFK that even remotely resembles any of these things…so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised the US wasn’t well represented on this list! Do you have a favorite airport? If so, tell us more about what makes it special…

I need to forward the article to my husband. I'm sure he will have an opinion on this. He did tell me that the Denver airport has a gluten free restaurant in it. I think that is cool.

Oh dear, I don't have a favorite, but my least favorite is O'HARE in Chicago! I've been stranded there many times en route from Boston to L.A and back! Anita

Great post! love Heathrow. My fave airport is Kastrup in Copenhagen. It's beautiful Danish designed and very good shopping, you should check it out:)! What I was really surprised by was Newark last year, no shopping and it felt like Alaska or some other outpost in the world, not NY…

I think it is interesting that there are no American airports…could be that the service and attitude of the airport employees is so bad that the flyers cannot see past that to find the good in the airports.
I love the Amsterdam airport! And frankly I like Charles de gualle.
Have a great night!

Very cool! I can't believe that Seoul has an ice skating rink! I love the garden too. That would sure make a layover more enjoyable!
