Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Renowned for its challenging golf courses, Kiawah Island is also an excellent destination for families. It gorgeous beaches, popular children’s program, world renowned tennis program make it a perfect family vacation destination.

Bring your golf clubs. Just be prepared for the challenge of the very difficult Ocean Course. Not quite ready for that challenge? There are four other courses on the property.
Rent bikes – The
hard packed sand of the beaches make it one of the few places where you can
ride a bike on the beach, something that kids of all ages will enjoy.

wildlife in the marshes including egrets, herons and cranes – you may even spot
an alligator sunning itself along the bike paths.

Detour to a well hidden but important attraction – the Angel Oak on John’s Island, the oldest tree in the United States.
EAT:
There are no less than eleven different dining options ranging from casual lunch places to candelit dining, all spread throughout the resort… some favorites are:
Jasmine Porch at The Sanctuary is the place to go for low country cuisine…try the Shrimp and Grits.
Cherrywood BBQ and Ale House is good for more casual dining at the Osprey Point Clubhouse.
If you go downtown, do not miss Hominy Grill for breakfast or lunch…GREAT southern food and worth the trip (in my top five restaurants in the US)!

STAY:
All of the properties (with the exception of privately owned homes) on Kiawah Island are booked or managed through Kiawah Island Resort. There are many options to choose from – luxury hotel accomodations at oceanfront resort, The Sanctuary, condos and villas at varying price points or private home rentals.
Note: Kiawah holds a special place in my heart that is made even more poignant after the recent events in Boston – I completed the Kiawah Island Half Marathon there in 2009. It is my only “marathon” experience but the people who lined the course and cheered us on along the way and at the finish were such an important part of the experience. Clearly, it was the same in Boston. In the midst of this tragedy, the stories of heroism and generosity shine though.
A lovely getaway for me, since we here in Minneapolis are expecting more SNOW today! Can you believe that?
