Some people wait for Super Bowl Sunday, others mark their calendars to watch Wimbledon, but for me, the first Saturday in May has always been my favorite sporting day of the year. Just as it has on every first Saturday in May since 1875, The Kentucky Derby will be run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky this Saturday, and I can’t wait. I love the pomp and circumstance, the crazy hats, the back stories about the horses and their owners, trainers and jockeys, and I always tear up when the band plays My Old Kentucky Home when the horses walk onto the track. For the record, I have picked the winner of the past two Kentucky Derbys – this year my pick is Dortmund.

How I wish I could watch the races. I am enamored with the horse and his power, beauty, whimsy (they can make the funniest faces!) and beautiful lines while running or just standing still.
That mint julep looks FANTASTIC, and may the best horse and rider win!

I too love the pomp and circumstance that surrounds this big day, I love watching the preshow as much as the race itself. This year will be at a shower (assuming I am feeling better) while its happening but look forward to the recaps….may the best horse win!

I always get too nervous to watch the Derby as I fear a horse getting inured but I love the tradition of it and the pomp and circumstance of the whole vent!
