Happy Friday and cheers to Labor Day Weekend!! The bookmarks on my iPad are filling up fast since I haven’t done a “Radar Screen” post in quite a while, so I thought I would take a break from our virtual round the world tour and share some of things that have caught my attention recently.
Some of you may remember this post I wrote recently about the Raffles Hotel in Singapore being my father’s favorite hotel. Before my father passed away many years ago, he expressed his desire for his memory to be toasted at the famous Long Bar at the Raffles. I visited in the 90’s and raised a glass in his memory. Last week, my youngest son, Carter, took a short jaunt to Singapore in between his internship in Hong Kong and the start of his semester abroad at Chinese University in Hong Kong…while his student’s budget didn’t allow for a stay at Raffles, he happily forked over $30 for a Singapore Sling (yes, $30 for a cocktail!) and toasted the grandfather he never knew. It brings tears to my eyes just writing this!
My two favorite movies of the summer (both took place in France!) were Magic in the Moonlight and The Hundred Foot Journey…Don’t miss these two!
And, I need to see this movie:
(go here if you cannot view the video)
That is my dream job (I have to see the movie, but I have a feeling it doesn’t turn out to be as amazing as I might think):

My go to drink of the Summer of 2014…Chateau D’Esclans “Whispering Angel”…which I plan to drink until there is snow on the ground…I am not a wine connoisseur by any means, but I had this at a restaurant earlier in the summer and fell in love with it.
Speaking of wine, this post by Mo, of Mocadeaux (who is a wine expert!), eloquently explains how this week’s Napa earthquake will affect the wine industry.
What Katie Ate is a gorgeous blog combining food and photography from Australian based Katie Quinn Davies …it is definitely worth checking out. I discovered her blog recently from a post from last year on Italy which showcased her breathtaking photos. Trust me…you will be hitting “Pin It” like crazy (and then booking your trip) when you see these photos!
Albertina from Mimosa Lane took her adorable six year old daughter on her first trip to Paris this summer and shared some great tips for visiting Paris with children here.
If you aren’t already following Pam’s blog, Views From My Kitchen Sink, you MUST (boy, does she have a view!)…read about her family travels to Iceland here…the photos are spectacular!

In honor of all the children heading back to school next week – check out the school lunches that French children eat…sure beats ham sandwiches and twinkies!
Finally, for your weekend reading, here is the latest online issue of Virtuoso Life. I think it is one of the best travel magazines out there!
That’s a wrap…for the week and the summer (say it ain’t so!)…I am taking off the long weekend and will be back on Wednesday with more of my “best of the best” from Travel Week.
Have a fabulous holiday weekend…wherever you may be wandering!!
xoxo

What a lovely story about your son toasting his grandfather with a Singapore Sling. It seems longer than a month since we were over there! So many great links here, I don't know where to start – maybe with What Katie Ate followed by Virtuoso Life. Enjoy your long weekend!

Love everything about this post Sandy and we already know we have the exact same taste in movies and hotels:)
But honestly reading what Carter did for the grandfather he never knew not only brought tears to my eyes made me have a full blown crying session (we know I have been unusual weepy this week) but still that was incredibly endearing and what a guy you have raised!
Cheers to your father AND your Carter
Have a wonderful weekend….

The very first drink I ordered when I was 21 was a Singapore Sling. I have not sipped one in years. I always imagined myself in an exotic place as I sipped a sling. I could never have imagined a place as beautiful and elegant as Raffles.
I plan to make a note to order one the next time I have the opportunity to do so. While sipping, I will be thinking of this beautiful tribute to your father, Sandy.
This post is filled with Grace Notes!
I always leave this destination inspired and enlightened!

I just saw The Hundred-Foot Journey this weekend–loved it! My husband predicted me that it would set me yearning for some excellent food, and it did.

I am so behind on my reading and just got here! Thanks so much for mentioning my post about the earthquake. We just got back from a weekend in Sonoma and San Francisco and heard many tales about the continuing recovery in Napa.
I absolutely love that your son toasted your father at the Raffles Hotel bar. Such a sweet story!

Sandy,
Happy September!!! After an extended break, it is great to be back to see what my blog friends have been up to. How special that Carter was able to toast his grandfather. Maybe my Carter will sit in that very place one day in the future. Whispering Angel was my favorite beverage of the summer, too!!!! Cheers! And, so happy for all these links and recommendations. So sad that summer is done, but the happy news is now we get to focus on all things Fall! Let school begin!
