As I obsessed over The Weather Channel in advance of the big snowstorm last week, I found my eye lingering to a photo essay showing hundreds of vintage travel photos. One thing led to another and I started searching out old travel photos on Pinterest and Tumblr, and I even pulled out some photo albums to see some old photos of my parents.
Here is a photo I just love of my parents in the South of France in the early 1960’s…
And, here are some of my favorites I found while browsing the internet, ranging from the days of Downton Abbey to the Mad Men era…

What do you think…are the days of glamorous travel behind us? Judging from my experience flying to Florida last week, I would have to say I fear they may be.

Those were the days….though I love every era you have shared here, I have to say that the 1960s are my favorite, probably because I lived through it as a child, a most curious and in-awe child. My aunt was the traveler of the family, and from her posh luggage (those hat boxes in pink) to her excursions in Europe, I just loved how a flight was such a glamorous thing. Today? Tight security, economic travel and even how once dresses to fly these days has taken a huge component away from traveling. That's why it's great to be fashionable when you actually GET to your destination!
This is such a thought-provoking post my friend, and an entire book could be written of the history of travel…hmmmm…..maybe the blank pages are waiting just for you.

I LOVE these pictures!!! Traveling is most certainly not what it used to be! It used to be so civilized even glamorous and i love how people used to "dress" to fly. Now you see baggy jeans, velour sweatsuits and such, not too glamorous:)
We can only hope that we will eventually see that some things are better left unchanged and slowly move back to a more elegant refined way to travel. Love the pic of your parents, hope you are having fun.

Sandy these photos are just fab. I do remember the glamorous days of air travel. That pic in the 747 is just amazing. I am sorry to say-it's one of the least glamorous things I do these days (strip down at the airport, expose my luggage interior to tsa, squish way to close to strangers). I love this memory and, despite it all, we still love to travel. It's not the getting there so much but the being there! 😉

Sandy these photos are fabulous! a great way to spend the day, looking at photos from your parents adventures.
I agree with the others, traveling today is not fun, even in first class.
Thank you for sharing.

One of my favorite things about traveling used to be seeing all of the glamorous people and clothing. Now I see lots of pj's and sweats, and it's so much trouble to fly…definitely not the glory days of travel…
